In 2016 I was approached by the USC Graduate School about creating video content for YouTube. Together with administrators and production vendor Midnight Hour Studios, I developed the explainer series 'Fellowship Spotlight." The series highlights the incredible research of USC graduate fellows pursuing their PhDs. A PhD thesis must be a significant contribution to the field, and some fellows research for several years before completing their work, meaning the topics can become quite complex! This presents an interesting challenge for a producer. All of the research was incredible - but casting the series was also about which topics would resonate with audiences, and choosing fellows who could communicate those concepts in an engaging manner. Through the process of screening different candidates, interviewing them about their work, and editing the interviews down into concise, informative segments, I learned SO MUCH. But more importantly, it was extremely gratifying to shine a spotlight on their hard work, and encapsulate their achievements for audiences to enjoy.
